Betty  Chen
Betty Chen, 78, of Somerset, New Jersey passed away on Wednesday, February 5th, 2020 at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in Somerville, New Jersey.

Mrs. Chen was born September 23, 1941 in Dobbs Ferry, New York to Tom and Sue (Chan) Eng. Betty attended Berkeley Secretarial School and received her Associates degree from Brookdale Community College. Betty lived her formative years in Belleville, New Jersey, and then resided primarily in Holmdel, New Jersey and Brussels, Belgium before relocating and settling in Somerset, New Jersey in 2005.

Betty spent most of her professional career as a Data Analyst for Bellcore in Piscataway, New Jersey. At Bellcore, Betty enjoyed participating in Toastmasters and was an active member of the Pioneers, an organization focused on volunteer services.

Upon moving to the Somerset Run community in Somerset, New Jersey, Betty was an active leader and participant in multiple clubs. Betty excelled at playing cards and loved playing Bridge, Poker and Canasta with her close friends. Betty was also a member of the Women’s Club, an active participant in the Tennis and Bocce Clubs and a huge contributor to the Chinese New Year celebrations.

Betty was an avid traveler and loved taking trips with her family or closest friends. Betty was able to travel extensively throughout the United States in addition to recent international trips to China and Europe. Going on cruises was another favorite activity and she was fortunate enough to sail to a multitude of destinations including North America, Europe, and the Caribbean.

Above all, Betty’s greatest love was spending time with her family. Whether it was family vacations, celebrating birthdays or holidays, or just getting together and playing games, she loved having all of her children and grandchildren together. In recent years, she treasured the family's annual summer vacations, primarily in Avalon, New Jersey.

Betty was a devoted wife, a loving mother, a caring sister, an adoring grandmother, a kind aunt, and a dear friend. Upon engaging with anyone, Betty always demonstrated humility, generosity, kindness and compassion. She will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all of her friends and family.

Betty is survived by her beloved husband of 54 years, Nick, her loving son Michael Chen and his wife Donna; her loving son Jeffrey Chen and his wife Marlene; her loving daughter, Aimee Garriga and her husband Jose; her dear brother, Ping Eng and his wife Maggie; her dear sister, Lee Madden and her husband Bob. She is also survived by her six cherished grandchildren, Grace, Kyra, Alex, Ava, Adrian and Ryan, and many nieces and nephews.

Betty was predeceased by her parents, Tom and Sue, and her sister Lai Ping Wong.

Visitation will be held on Monday, February 10th from 4 to 8 PM and Tuesday, February 11th from 10 to 11 AM at the Gleason Funeral Home, 1360 Hamilton Street, Somerset, New Jersey. Entombment will follow at Somerset Hills Memorial Park and Mausoleum, 95 Mt Airy Road, Basking Ridge, New Jersey.
