Obituary for Francis Kip "Frank" Totten

Francis Kip "Frank" Totten
Frank K. Totten of Monmouth Junction passed away peacefully and surrounded by family at the age of 87 on July 9, 2019.

Frank was born on October 27, 1931 to the late Harry and Alida Totten. He grew up on a farm in Neshanic, where he discovered an interest in agriculture. This became a lifelong love of his, along with classical music, family, learning, and helping others. After graduating from Somerville High School in 1950, he earned a BA in history and political science from Hiram College in 1954. Frank began teaching in Hillsborough, then spent the majority of his tenure teaching English at New Brunswick High School. Throughout his professional and retired life, Frank served on committees of numerous organizations that support agriculture, education, and music. Notably, he was a life member of multiple education organizations and served as New Jersey Education Association president from 1977-81. Frank also supported causes that aimed to bring enrichment and equality to our nation and its communities. Frank’s desire for growth and learning was only surpassed by his efforts to improve the lives of others.
Frank also enjoyed world travel. Over the years, he visited places like Alaska and most of the US, parts of Africa during a photography safari, Canada, European countries including Germany and Italy, Australia, Israel, and others.

Frank is lovingly remembered by his brother David and sister-in-law Joan; daughter Lorali (Lori), son Dana, and daughter-in-law Venice; grandchildren Rhyan, Elijah, Tony, and Grace; a host of nieces and nephews, and extended family and friends. The circle of individuals whom Frank cherished is expansive; he will be missed and remembered by many.

Visitations will be held 2-4 and 7-9 on Friday, July 19 at The Gleason Funeral Home, 1360 Hamilton St, Somerset, NJ. An interment service will be held on Saturday, July 20. The service will be private at the family’s request. A celebration of life funeral service will be held in the fall at Princeton University Chapel. Details regarding date and time of Frank’s service at Princeton University Chapel are forthcoming, which will be updated on his obituary page on the Gleason Funeral Home website.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Princeton Society of Musical Amateurs. PSMA is a non-profit organization to which Frank was a devoted member for many years.
