Obituary for Joseph Orvos

Joseph J. Orvos


Mr. Joseph J. Orvos passed away on Thursday at his home in Ringoes, NJ surrounded by his beloved family and friends. He was 76 years old.

Mr. Orvos was born in Cegled, Hungary and came to the United States at the age of 14. Mr. Orvos lived in New Brunswick, Edison and North Brunswick prior to moving to Ringoes. He graduated from Edison High School and attended Pace University on Scholarship.

He was employed by Mobil Chemical Co. for 30 years as a Research Chemist and by National Starch/Henkel in Bridgewater, for an additional 15 years, as an Analytical Scientist.
Mr. Orvos served in the United States Army Reserves where he attained the rank of Staff Sargent and the achievement of Master Marksman.

Mr. Orvos was one of the founders of the North Brunswick Youth Soccer Program. He was a master wood carver and an artist in many ways. He enjoyed gardening, landscaping, dancing, cooking, fishing, fencing, and being with his family. He spent many years as a volunteer on the Cedar Grove Cemetery Board as Treasurer for the Association.

Mr. Orvos was predeceased by his sisters Sari Orvos and Susan Lakatos.

He is survived by his long-time love of 22 years, Beverly Gale Smith of Ringoes, and his children Joseph A. Orvos and wife Kathleen of Jersey City, John Orvos and wife Lisa of Montgomery, and Kristine Orvos Cresti and husband Anthony of Chester, NJ along with 9 spectacular grandchildren Maximus, Natalia, Gianluca, Xavier, Sumer, Jace, Kylie, Sophie and Colson. He is also survived by his brothers Pete Herner of Toms River and Paul Orvos and wife Judy of Washington DC.

The Orvos family will receive relatives and friends from 5-8 PM on Monday evening at the Gleason Funeral Home 1360 Hamilton Street in Somerset. A funeral service will take place on Tuesday at 1 PM at the Middlebush Reformed Church 1 South Middlebush Road in Somerset. Graveside services will follow at Cedar Grove Cemetery in Somerset. There will be a repass at Pheasants Landing restaurant at 311 Amwell Road, Hillsborough, NJ after the cemetery.
