Elizabeth "Betty" Paris-Paul
Sadly, East Millstone lost its oldest resident today, March 23, 2018 when Elizabeth Paul (aka Betty Paris) left us to reunite with her husband Walter. She was 93 years old (almost 94) and had lived her entire life here. Born and raised on a farm on Grouser Road, she and husband Walter Paris lived first in the little house on Livingston Avenue and then moved into the big house on the corner where they raised their three girls and were active community members. She was an early member of the East Millstone First Aid Squad and the Millstone Valley Fire Dept. Ladies Auxiliary. She was a longtime Sunday school teacher and member of the Dutch Reformed Church on Franklin Street. Elizabeth was known by everyone in town as the lady who walked Canal Road, which she did for many years to get to her longtime job of caring for a family on Grouser Road. Many times neighbors would pass her and offer her a ride, but she usually refused, preferring to enjoy the sereneness of the walk. The only wheels you ever saw her driving were on a bicycle, never having mastered the art of driving a car. She was a constant babysitter, and if you needed your house cleaned or a party set up, she was the one to call. In her lifetime she had over 30 different employers, not because she couldn’t hold a job but because she was always in demand! She would often be found in her yard pulling weeds, trimming bushes, planting flowers, raking leaves, washing the port and the furniture and all the general outdoor cleanup needed in any season. She was an organizer and a doer and hard to keep up with, even in her later years.
She is survived by and will be sorely missed by, three daughters, Barbara Paris, Susan Manna (husband John) and Christine Wilson-Davis (husband Dave); 5 grandchildren – John Manna (wife Kate), Amy Gallant (husband Larry), Ryan Wilson (wife Kim), Tim Manna (wife Erica) and Stephen Stashek (wife Alison); 8 great grandchildren – Kody Manna, Lisa Gallant, Rachel Manna, Tyler Gallant, Austin Wilson, Logan Wilson, Cameron Stashek, Ashton Wilson and a soon to be born, baby girl Stashek due in May; Sisters - Irene McClure, Vera Eueler, Jean Maison, Sue Todd (husband Jerry) and lifetime friend Lillian Scheer.
Family and friends may visit on Tuesday, March 27th from 9:30 A.M. to 10:30 A.M. at Gleason Funeral Home, 1360 Hamilton Street, Somerset, NJ 08873. A graveside service will begin at 11:00 A.M. at Cedar Hill Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations in her name to the East Millstone First Aid Squad, PO Box 2088, East Millstone, NJ 08875-2088.
