Yoko Shinohara, 73, passed away surrounded by her family on Monday, March 12, 2018 at her home in Somerset.
Mrs. Shinohara was born January 06, 1945 in Kyushu, Japan to the late Kazumi and Masae Koyama. She immigrated to the US in 1972 and settled in Manhattan, NY. She relocated to Matawan, where she lived for 15 years; in 1998 she moved with her family to Somerset.
In 1982, Yoko and her husband opened Jo-Sho Restaurant in Rahway; in 1991 they relocated the restaurant to its permanent location in Somerset. Yoko was involved with the National Japanese Society and actively supported the Juvenile Diabetes (JDRF). She was also a proud supporter of the Franklin Township Police. Yoko loved singing, golf and fishing and had an appreciation for good tasting sake and wine.
Mrs. Shinohara is survived by her loving husband of 33 years, Yoshiyuki Shinohara; daughters, Keiko Gendi and her husband Sherif and June Heavner and her husband Ryan; her brother, Osamu Koyama; her sisters, Toshiko Matsushita and Kyoko Suzuki; her grandchildren, Christopher, Justin, Andrew, Jaxa and Reya and a host of nieces and nephews.
She will be greatly missed by the extensive list of regular patrons and friends of Jo-Sho.
A memorial service and visitation will be held at Gleason Funeral Home 1360 Hamilton Street, Somerset, NJ 08873 on Wednesday, March 14th from 6-8 PM.
