Obituary for Mildred Rippa
Mildred Mary Mandile Rippa,("Millie") cherished mother, wife, sister, and grandmother passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 6, 2018 at Regency Heritage Rehab Center in Somerset, NJ. She was 90 years old.
Mrs. Rippa was born April 10, 1927 in Brooklyn, New York to the late John and Angie (LaRusso) Mandile. Mildred lived in Cranford for 12 years before moving to Berkeley Heights in 1966 where she lived for 40 years. In 2005 she moved to Somerset with her two sisters, Phyllis and Mary.
Mildred graduated from New Utrecht High School in Brooklyn, NY and was valedictorian of her class. After graduation from high school, she joined the US Cadet Nursing Core, to train as a nurse. Mildred went to nursing school in Central Islip Long Island where she graduated in 1947 as a RN. She worked as registered nurse for 57 years. Mildred worked for Planned Parenthood for 19 years as the Clinicial Director for Union County. Mildred continued to work until the age of 77, working for a doctor's office in Plainfield. Mildred loved to read, travel, play bridge, and go to the movies. She was an avid sports fan of the NY Yankees and Giants. She was passionate about going to the gym and exercising.
Mrs. Rippa is predeceased by her loving husband, Jerry Ralph Rippa, who died in 1983, and her sister, Philomena McAvoy. Mildred and Jerry met in Brooklyn and were married in June of 1947. They were married for 36 years. Together they rasised two children, Lori, and Peter. She was a devoted mother, sister, and friend. Her neighbors in Berkeley Heights, Eileen and Joseph Flaherty, and family were very dear to her.
She is survived by her son, Peter Rippa and his wife, Kathleen of Montville; her daughter, Lori Montesion and her husband, Robert McSulla of Asbury; her brother, John Mandile and his wife, Lucille of Hamilton; her sister, Mary Gallo of Brooklyn; her grandson, Zachary and many nieces and nephews.
All of them had a special place in her heart.
Family and friends may visit on Monday, March 12th from 4-8 PM at Gleason Funeral Home, 1360 Hamilton Street, Somerset, NJ 08873.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, March 13th at 10:30 A.M. at St. Matthias Church in Somerset. Burial will follow at St. Gertrude Cemetery in Colonia.
